How To Get Rid of Flies Forever

If there’s one thing about summer that you really can’t stand, it’s flies and gnats. Just open the window a little to let in a little breeze and you have to deal with these annoying and unexpected guests. Flies and midges are attracted to ripening foods and sweet or fermenting drinks, and the heat favours their growth: at temperatures above 25 degrees the larvae develop in less than 24 hours and reproduce even at a surprising speed: did you know that a fly can lay up to 500 eggs per day?

Although full growth occurs in a week, flies and midges will take advantage of any opportunity to multiply, from gushes to garbage bins or damp places like rags or empty bottles. These insects carry unwanted bacteria on your fruit and vegetables. Although they are harmless bacteria for the human body, they will still be the cause of damage to your products, making them mature and rot earlier. There are several remedies against midges and flies, one above all to catch them. But then you will have to take care of the prevention and make sure that they do not return … so here is our guide to remove flies with natural repellents or eliminate this annoying problem forever.

The capture

Using insecticides and repellents is not enough, sometimes a real hunting intervention is necessary to disinfect the house from flies and gnats and, as usual, there are completely natural remedies to do this. Here are some ingenious types of fly traps to eliminate them from your home forever!

1. The semi alcoholic do-it-yourself

As we mentioned, fruit flies and flies are attracted to strong smells and sweet substances, including apple cider vinegar, red wine and beer. Take a jar or bowl and fill it with one of these substances and then close it with cling film. Make small holes (for example using a fork or a knife) in the film and the trap is ready: the insects will be attracted inside but then they will not be able to get out!

2. Vinegar and dish soap

The attacks of midges can occur at any time, sometimes just opening the garbage to allow the annoying insects to invade the whole room … a very simple remedy involves the use of vinegar and dish soap. Add a few drops of detergent to a bowl of vinegar. The soap will reduce the surface tension of the vinegar so that when the insects touch the surface they will be attracted “inside” the liquid and can no longer fly away

3. The remedy for animal rights activists: catching live flies

Take a plastic bag and place banana peels inside it. It won’t take long, midges and flies will be attracted to the inside of the bag by the smell of the peel. Once the bag is full enough, close it and take it out into the fresh air so you can release the flies somewhere away from home.

4. The ingenious remedy: the paper cone

Here’s another nifty trap: making a paper cone with a very narrow hole at the end. Place the thin end down inside a glass or jar with some vinegar and a piece of ripe fruit. The edges of the cup must be covered and capped very well: midges and flies will crawl inside the container without being able to get out.

5. Milk, sugar and pepper

For a homemade trap, try this recipe: take a litre of milk, 100 g of sugar and 50 g of ground pepper. Cook in a saucepan over low heat for 10 minutes and pour into a deep dish. The smell will attract flies and midges, but even before they can “taste” the mush you have prepared, they will drown you due to the texture.

Prevention is better than cure

These remedies are ideal for getting rid of house flies and midges. Even better than having to hunt down hordes of pesky insects with the most ingenious methods, it would be to prevent them from invading rooms or laying eggs. How to do it? Here are some precautions you can take to attract as few flies as possible.

Cover fruit and vegetables

For some foods, the best solution remains the refrigerator. For others, however, such as potatoes and onions, the cold in the fridge could alter the taste, or cause them to rot more quickly. Then use a mesh lid to cover the fruit and vegetables that need to be outdoors.

Do not leave food scraps or scraps lying around for a long time, unless covered or placed in special containers, because obviously, these attract our little enemies. Surfaces must also always be clean, as odours caused by food residues can always attract insects. Also, remember to change and wash rags and tea towels often!
